BREAK LIKE BAYERN

The Coerver Method is an internationally acclaimed teaching methodology.

Often people will argue that isolated technical training and focussed skill development doesn’t fit into the modern tactical approach.

I believe the opposite.

That it is within the modern tactical trends that focussed technical and skill development is most important! Without the players capable of executing the necessary technical actions, identifying the different situations and then adapting (QUICKLY) to any changes to the situation, we will create teams that are robotic and predictable.

Enter the Coerver method. In planning we strive to use various small sided games as the introductory exercise to different tactical concepts. Here’s an example of a practice focussed on developing Quick transition/ Fast Break Attack from midfield.

There are a number of coaching opportunities - either with the ball, without the ball or focussed in the transition from defence to attack. Be sure to pick just ONE of these to ensure that you don’t overload the players.

Fast Break Attack Practice 1. Cayl Coetsee

Fast Break Attack

SETUP

  • Mark a 20m x 30m grid on the halfway line.

  • Place 2 tall cones 8m apart in the middle of the grid on the halfway line.

  • Position a STRIKER and a DEFENDER outside the grid on the edge of the penalty area.

  • Divide players into 2 teams.

  • Position 1 of the attacking players on the line between the tall cones.

ACTION

  • Players play 3 v 3 inside the grid.

  • The attacking team tries to retain the ball and create space to pass the ball through the defenders to the target man between the cones.

  • The defending team tries to regain the ball and break quickly by passing forward, out of the grid (ideally through the STRIKER).

  • The opponents try to recover quickly to support the DEFENDER.

PROGRESSION OR VARIATION

  • Play 3 v 2

  • Position 2 STRIKERS against 1 DEFENDER outside the penalty area.

  • Place Grid in the wide channel.

COACHING POINTS

  • Look to pass forward after regaining the ball.

  • Pass either into feet or into space - sneak a look to see where the DEFENDER is.

  • Quick support on the ball in the break.

  • Off the ball movement in the transition - overlaps, cross over runs, support from deep.

  • Hold the midfield - don’t over commit - 1 player must provide balance.
